Professional and educational visit to the Information Centre on the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in Sarajevo

The professional and educational visit to the Sarajevo Information Centre on the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) was held for the third-year students of the Security Studies department, as part of the Programme subject for Professional Practice course 6, with aim of bringing closer the legacy of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and activities of the Centre. The visit was organised by the Senior Assistant Ph.D. Kenan Hodžić and was also met by students from Spain, who are staying this semester at the University of Sarajevo – Faculty of Criminalistics Criminology and Security Studies, as part of the Erasmus programme exchange. Expert advisor Ismena Čaušević presented the work of the ICTY and its valuable contribution to the international justice, in establishing the historical facts, providing evidence and prosecuting those responsible for serious violations of international humanitarian law. With a special emphasis on the role of the ICTY in restoring and preserving peace in the region, and the importance of protecting and promoting human rights. During the tour, students had the opportunity to visit the authentic Courtroom No. 2, where individuals responsible for committing the war crimes at the territory of the former Yugoslavia tried, as well as the permanent exhibition that showcases the entire work and contribution of the ICTY during its 24 years. This permanent exhibition includes photographs, testimonies and other exhibits taken from the ICTY/MICT archives, used as evidence in numerous trials. During the visit, students were given the opportunity to participate in a workshop. This extraordinary visit provided the students with a unique experience and enriched their understanding of the mechanisms of international justice and the importance of such processes in the post-conflict societies.
