Delegation of the City of Sarajevo Pays Tribute to the Victims of the Srebrenica Genocide in Potočari

The delegation of the City of Sarajevo, led by Mayor Samir Avdić, attended today’s official commemorative and religious program at the Potočari Memorial Centre, marking the 31st anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide.

Alongside the Chairman of the City Council, Alen Girt, and the Deputy Chairwoman, Svjetlana Šošić, Avdić attended the commemoration at the former Battery Factory. Following the ceremony, they paid their respects and laid flowers at the Memorial Stone for all the innocent victims of the Srebrenica genocide.

The city delegation also attended the religious program at the Musalla, the collective funeral prayer (dženaza) for the martyrs (šehidi), and the burial of the victims at the Potočari cemetery.

Concurrently, Sarajevo marked July 11th with dignity.

“Today, as we witness the immeasurable pain of families burying their loved ones in Potočari, Sarajevo shares their grief with profound respect. Flags flown at half-mast, the Flower of Srebrenica displayed on the City Hall (Vijećnica), and the ten-hour reading of the names of the murdered residents of Srebrenica should serve as a loud warning to the entire world that such evil must never be repeated to anyone, anywhere. Truth and justice are the only path toward building peace,” Avdić stated.

Exactly at 12:00 PM, sirens sounded across the capital in memory of the victims, and flags were lowered to half-mast at the City Hall, Hum Hill, and the White Fortress (Bijela tabija).
