On this day, 5 of April 1992, the longest siege of a capital city officially began.

The beginning of the siege was marked by the deaths of the first two Sarajevo victims, Suada Deliberović and Olga Sučić.

As a sign of remembering our two heroines, mayor of Sarajevo Predrag Puharić accompanied by his Deputy mayor Mirza Selimbegović and the City Councillor Biljana Lazarević paid tribute and laid flowers on the memorial plaque on the Suada and Olga Bridge.

City officials also laid flowers at the ”Dobrinja Barricade’’ monument and the Police Academy ‘Vraca’.

On commemorating the Day of the beginning of Sarajevo siege, 5 of April, we are fostering a culture of remembrance, stated Puharić.

’’The truth about the events that occurred in Sarajevo and Bosnia and Herzegovina must never be forgotten, different interpretations must not be allowed’’, said Puharić in his statement.

Sarajevo was under the siege for 1,425 days: without electricity, water, gas or food supplies. During the siege, more than 11,000 civilians were killed, including 1,601 children and more than 50,000 citizens of Sarajevo were lightly or seriously wounded.

It is estimated that nearly 50,000 missiles were fired at the city during the siege, while it was recorded that on July 22, 1993., a record number of 3,777 missiles were fired.

’’The truth about the events that occurred in Sarajevo and Bosnia and Herzegovina must never be forgotten, different interpretations must not be allowed’’, stated Puharić.
